Tommy Rees Joins Atlanta Falcons as Offensive Coordinator
The Atlanta Falcons have officially hired Tommy Rees as their new offensive coordinator, marking a reunion with head coach Kevin Stefanski. The two coaches previously worked together with the Cleveland Browns, and now they’ll be looking to rebuild the Falcons’ offense in 2026.
Rees and Stefanski: A Familiar Partnership
Tommy Rees comes to Atlanta after two seasons with the Cleveland Browns, where he served as offensive coordinator in 2025. His tenure in Cleveland followed a successful coaching career at Notre Dame and Alabama, where he honed his skills as an assistant and coordinator.
Despite his solid track record, Rees finds himself without a job following the Browns’ decision to part ways with Stefanski after six seasons. Stefanski’s dismissal left both him and Rees seeking new opportunities.
Falcons’ New Era: Stefanski Takes Charge
Last week, the Falcons hired Stefanski as their new head coach, parting ways with Raheem Morris after three seasons. This move, along with the firing of general manager Terry Fontenot, set the stage for Rees to join Atlanta’s coaching staff. Rees was widely considered the top candidate for the offensive coordinator role following the coaching shakeup.
Rebuilding in Atlanta
While Stefanski’s time with the Browns was marked by inconsistency—especially at quarterback—he did earn two Coach of the Year honors during his tenure. The Browns struggled to find a permanent quarterback, leading to several changes under center, including appearances by Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders in 2025.
In contrast, the Falcons have a more stable foundation. Despite finishing with an 8-9 record in 2025, Atlanta is in a three-way tie at the top of the NFC South. However, questions remain at quarterback, with Michael Penix Jr. recovering from an ACL injury and uncertainty surrounding Kirk Cousins’ future in Atlanta.
